Kingdom of Holstem
Odin's Folly 1E 125-140
Odin's Folly 1E 125-140
Family legend holds that a great warrior, Odin of the South, rallied the southern Nords after years of conquest in the first era, before the unification by Harald. He grew powerful and ambitious. As war raged across Skyrim, he sought to find the perfect plan to unite the clans. Deeming military conquest too risky and prolonged, he petitioned Shor (Lorkhan), the Warrior King of Nords, for Divine aid. Shor made a pact with Odin - He would provide Odin with the tools to unite the Nords, if Odin were to bring war to the Aldmer and their descendents. Convinced that he could do that plus more, he accepted and was bestowed with the Amulet of Holstem and the Axe of Holstem, Holstem being the name Shor said would be the name of the new Kingdom Odin would establish.
The Amulet gave Odin great powers over men, to win their hearts and minds, to strike fear into their hearts, to bend them to his will, and gave him the gift of a silver tongue. The Axe could disintegrate mass upon striking it. With these tools, Shor set Odin off on a mission of bloodletting and conquest.
Odin attracted quite an army and enemies feared him in combat for his prowess and his axe. Years passed and his power grew, yet he still did not wage war against the Aldmer peoples. Surrounded on all sides with enemies, he could not see a feasible means of fighting the Aldmer as well. With King Harald challenging Odin for dominance of the Nords, Odin could not risk diverting resources away from him. Shor was furious and summoned Odin to his presence on the hill where they first met. When he heard Odin's reason for not fighting the Aldmer, Shor struck him down saying he could not understand the machinations of gods and should have done as he promised. He cursed the great tools he gave Odin saying only a member of his his bloodline who had earned the right to wield them, would be allowed to use them otherwise die just as Odin had. The family built a lavish tomb in the hill where Odin fell, establishing the Halls of Holstem, future family burial ground.
The Fate of Holstem 1E 140 - Present
Odin's sons battled for control of the Kingdom, fracturing the land greatly. Without the influence of the Amulet, great numbers of warriors and allies left the Kingdom in favor of Harald. The warring princes nearly brought the family to extinction. One of the more successful brothers thought he had earned the right to bare the family tools, but died the moment he attempted to remove the amulet from his father's neck. The another son, Farald the Wise, yielded to Harald under the promise that he would be granted dominion over the kingdom and aid against his brother Ivan.
Farald serves loyally and aides greatly in the expansion of Skyrim territory all across the north. He marries the daughter of Harald to seal the alliance between the houses. Succeeding generations of Holstems fight honorably and are recognized throughout Skyrim. They attempt to refine their character and attain Charisma naturally in an attempt to honor Odin.
With the subsequent defeat of Skyrim in the late First Era, the ambitious King of Holstem, Thorag IV, attempts to seize the throne in the Skyrim War of Succession. The Family was reduced to County status and lost most of their outer holdings as per the peace terms that they signed in order to ensure that the family was not totally destroyed. Forced into obscurity the family was forced to live on their past glories. The Counts of Holstem hired their warriors out as mercenaries, sometimes hiring even themselves, in order to support and maintain the family. It was not until the rise of the Empire did the family once again see glory,
When Talos (Tiber Septim) marched his armies north and the Nords swore allegiance to him, the Holstems immediately integrated themselves into the new Imperial system. The family held positions as clerks, seamen, traders, and soldiers of the Empire. For their service, Tiber Septim elevated them to Ducal status and built a new Fortress around the ancient one, to serve as an Imperial Garrison. Technically, the fortress belonged to the Holstems and hosted a permanent independent Imperial Garrison (Much like Hawkmouth Garrison inside Ebonheart), but the two were almost always commanded by the Holstems. The Ysmir Imperial Legion became fiercely loyal to the Holstems, who treated them with great respect and care and who spent personal funds for the betterment of the Legion.
[Still working on this, it was written late at night, so it might be a little incoherent and hard to read, hopefully I will fix that soon.
